I was just looking up the requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout. My have there been some changes. I won’t go over all of the changes at this time but will refer back to some of them in the future. I was just remembering one that I had a lot of trouble earning. It was the badge signaling.

It required building a signaling device which could be a buzzer or something equivalent. This wasn’t too tough as you could get components from the hobby store. However, two others were sending and receiving morse code at least twenty words a minute, and signaling using wig wag.

Learning to read the dots and dashes at a speed of twenty words a minute was tough enough, but I was able to understand it enough to finally pass. Today, I can only remember dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot is SOS in case I ever need it.

Wig Wag was a different animal where you used a flag held vertically over your head. Thjen swinging it to the right would be a dot. Swinging to the left was a dash. Dropping it down in front of you was the end of a word. Pausing over head was the start of a word.

I finally finished my wig wag part under a streetlight in Garvin Park for the counselor. It was the last badge I needed for Eagle Scout
