Trade shows were a real love hate relationship with us. We loved getting together with our customers and product users. This allowed a real source of input for us. The downside was the long hours of standing on your feet with a smile on your face. During the day we would have an endless stream of people talking to us. They had complaints about product price and delivery. This information is always useful. They always appreciated the information cards, cups, tee shirts, key chains, etc. that we handed out.
However, at the end of the day, after we had been out to dinner with customers and said goodnight, another get together usually happened. This involved the exhibitors and would take place in a quiet area like the exhibit hall or a corner of the hotel etc. There was always alcohol involved, so one had to be a little careful.
I have attended many of these and obtained a lot of information and developed many lifelong friendships. One year having hired a new field service manager, i sent him to the late night get together. When you arrive the first thing they do is give you a glass and pour you a drink. As the evening goes on. they keep filling your glass. Saying no never works. My man ended up in terrible shape. He was on booth duty and had a kind of green look to him. I know it was probably the most miserable day he ever spent at one of these shows.
It was my fault, and so I shared with him the secret. You never say no, when you reach your limit, just leave your glass full. They will pass you.
He was a quick learner and did marvelous work for us at future shows
