Just got a letter from the Illinois dept of revenue. It read like a Thunderbird starburst. Either I was delinquent, or I had overpaid, or some other obscure reason I didn’t understand. I had to go to the house we sold six years ago to pick up the letter, as They still haven’t updated our address even though we have filed taxes from our present address for six years. After I took it to Aaron for deciphering it turns out I overpaid by $1.70 cents. I am waiting patiently for the check.

Reminds me of the time I made a mistake on my federal taxes. I had forgotten one 1099 when I gave my information to Aaron to file for me. The IRS caught it and was demanding money. So we filed an amended tax return and included the check for the oversight. The IRS continued to demand money. Turns out they had cashed my check and continued to work from my original filing. Aaron and I ended up on a conference call where we filed another amended return. We went over it line item by line item. The IRS agent on the other end agreed with us and we shoved it into the fax machine and breathed a sigh of relief.

I went out and got into the car. Martha was waiting for me. She asked if it was over. I told her no, in a couple of weeks we will get a letter from the IRS stating we are late, and a penalty fee is being charged. Thisis exactly what happened, and I paid it. I was done fighting for the year.
