Way back in my days as a boy scout every May we would do an annual fund raiser. It didn’t start in May, however as we needed to get the supplies we needed. During the year we would collect the 46 oz cans of grocery products like tomato juice, orange juice and other liquids. Every member of the troop was to not only collect from their family’s use but get them from neighbors and relatives. In addition, we were to collect packing boxes to store the items in.
We had to take care of our collection by washing them out and making sure they were dry. These we kept inside so they wouldn’t rust. Then starting in May, we would meet at one of our leaders garages to complete our project. We boys had the job of using can openers to remove one end of the cans. Then they were turned over to one of our fathers or leaders to complete.
The adult would then solder a 60D nail to the bottom of the can. Now picture this, it is a 46 oz. can with a nail soldered to the bottom. What use are they? They are a perfect pot to put cut flowers in. The week of Memorial Day our troop had an agreement with one of the local stores to set up in front of the store and sell these items. The store itself was selling cut flowers for putting on the graves at the local Cemetaries. It was a very successful venture for our troop.
The profits were used to defray the cost of summer camp for the members of our troop. I haven’t seen anything like it since my days in the boy scouts.
