Sometime during the early 70’s we had a very interesting experience. We refer to it as the year of the appliance. During one 12-month span, every appliance in our house failed. The order fails me, but i believe it started with the garbage disposal. This was followed by the dishwasher. After it had been replaced, we had little time to relax, A varmint had crawled into our clothes dryer and was electrocuted setting fire and ending the life of the dryer.
Well, we had a month or two of nothing, then the water heater began leaking. A trip to sears to buy a new one which I replaced. You probably read about the disposal of the old one elsewhere in this blog. We thought this was the end of it. However, the next month the microwave quit. This was replaced, a nd we thought it was over.
Not so, the next month the control for the kitchen stove burned out and the cost to replace was more than a new stove. So, we bought a new stove.
The only unit left not replaced was the clothes washer. Guess what, the transmission in it broke. We began to think we or the house was cursed. We talked about having the place exorcised. We didn’t do that. But guess what? It was about twenty years before we had another failure.
However, Martha and I never forgot the year of the apploiance.
