Julie. our middle child, while working as a counselor at Atwood Park, observed a puppy being tossed from a passing vehicle. Being the crafty person she is, she got the dog checked and shots at a vet before bringing it home. Martha immediately fell in love with it. It became an adopted member of the family.
The dog turned out to be half German Shepard and half Border Collie. It grew to be a medium to large dog. It also became the protector of Martha, Julie, and Stacey. One time a friend of Stacey’s attempted to push his way passed the dog to visit. Taber relieved him of his jeans. I began to refer to the dog as lethal weapon.
One afternoon I came home from work and put Taber out back on his chain and went upstairs to change clothes. I could hear the dog going crazy in the backyard. I yelled down to the girls as to what was going on. They said Tommy from across the street was teasing the dog. Oh my gosh, I raced downstairs in time to see through the kitchen window, Tommy slapping the dog with his ball glove. Before I could get to them Taber nailed him. Tommy took off around the house apparently headed home.
Next thing you know Bob, Tommy’s father is ringing the doorbell. He wants to know why my dog was loose and went into the neighbor’s yard and attacked his son. I took him over to the kitchen window and showed him Tom’s ball glove laying in the middle of our backyard. He suggested maybe his son wasn’t quite being truthful. I suggested he go home and take care of his son. He reminded me that he would have to call the authorities.
The sheriff called and verified the incident and told me to keep the dog quarantined for some period and then take him to the vets for checking. He asked if the dog had his shots, and I assured he had, and I would get him to the vet at the proper time.
At the proper time I took Taber to the vet and had him checked. Then I went across to my neighbors to inform that Taber didn’t have rabies, and hadn’t caught anything from their son.
