Halloween has always been one of my favorite days. As a kid I was always excited to figure out what costume I would wear. Finances being as they were, we had to make whatever we were going to be. Then the hurrying around the neighborhood to collect as many goodies as we could. Our parents never worried about where we were or if we were in any kind of danger. I have to admit it was a simpler time.
When I grew up and got married and started a family, I had the pleasure of watching my kids go through their Halloweens. We just bought stacks of goodies to give out to the kids that came to the door and marveled at their costumes. All to soon our kids grew up and stopped celebrating Halloween.
So, I got this bright idea to put some life back in the day. I dressed up in costume and added a twist. Kids didn’t just come around like we did, they were accompanied by their parents or guardians. So, I added beers for the dads and martinis for the mothers. It did spice the day up for us all.
One year I had dressed as Dracula, all in black with a black cape with a bright red lining. At the end of the evening and no kids were in sight, I went out to see if there was any activity. Then one boy who looked like he was in his early teens was coming down the street. I backed into the corner of my porch and raised the cape to cover my face. When he rang the doorbell, I opened my cape and ask if I could help him. He cleared the hedge and was gone.
Here in this retirement community, we get no action, and I really miss it.
