Raising kids is not the easiest occupation in the world. You have to learn how to teach and protect without becoming a hovering parent. One has to allow them to learn by experience, which sometimes is painful. At a time when my son was 10 and his sisters were 8 and 4 respectively, there was a neighborhood boy Mike of 12 who basically was the neighborhood bully. He wasn’t really a bad kid but had his moments. He was forever a problem to my son. These are the times when you have to observe but allow things to work out. while being there to intervene if it gets too bad.

One particular day when Mike was a problem to my son, I told him that one day someone you least suspect will settle your hash. He just laughed.

It wasn’t a week later that i was in the garage and I hear a boy screaming for help. I run outside in time to see my daughter Julie who was 8 at the time with a handful of Mike’s shirt rearranging his face with her bony fist. I raced over to separate them and find out what the heck was going on. Seems Mike tried to take 4-year-old Stacey’s bike away from her. Julie to the rescue.

Mike’s tour as neighborhood bully apparently ended at that time
