When we first got married, Martha was not a very good cook. It wasn’t her fault, as her mother did everything in the kitchen without any help wanted or required. Everything she put on the table I complimented. She would respond that I am just saying those things to be kind. I assured her that if she messed up, I would let her know. Time passed with her getting better and trying different things.

Even though my mother taught us all how to cook, I stayed out of her way. I only contributed the things she asked me to do. I was required to do biscuits and gravy, stir fry, barbecuing, and certain baking items.

One day, she prepared this dish. To this day I have no idea what it was supposed to be. I honestly could not eat it, although I tried very hard. Finally, I took my plate and set it on the floor. Our dog Sam came ver, sniffed it and walked away. Martha said, “I guess I have been told”.

We would laugh about that for many years.
