Sixty years ago, when I was working at Bell Labs, A management directive was sent out that there would be no skylarking in the halls prior to Christmas. We all thought that a little funny and couldn’t understand why. I was much younger and a little crazier, so I took the bait. I sent cards around to everyone inviting them to a Christmas carol fest in the hallway on the last day of work before Christmas. This was long before email or anything like it. I signed the card “The Phantom”.
On the appointed day many of us got together in the hallway and sang a few Christmas carols. Management was basically put in a position where they could not do anything about it, and they knew it. No skylarking memos were ever sent out at least as long as I was employed there.
Over the next few years there were many other jokes and pranks pulled in the Labs, and there was always a Phantom business card left behind. Management was really trying to find the culprit, with no success. Then in 1968 I decided to take a position with Tecumseh Labs in Ann Arbor Michigan.
To cover my tracks, I confessed to another tech that I was the Phantom and gave him a prank to pull and a card to leave behind one week after I left. He did as ask, and so to this day, besides him and my two best friends, the Phantom remains a mystery
