At our annual golf get together we always played little money games involving skill and luck, mostly luck. One of these was the string game. It involved a piece of string and par three holes. As best as I can remember, the string started out about 10 feet long. It was used to measure how far from the hole the ball landed on a first shot on a par three hole. Each day the string would be n the cut shorter if a closer shot had occurred. I remember one year early in the week I had a shot that stopped about three inches from the hole. I felt sure all week that I would win the pot for that feat.

Wouldn’t you know it, on the very last day, on the 17th hole at Admiral LeHigh golf course Robert hit a hole in one. We were all happy for him, except I felt a little short in the wallet.

That wasn’t the only hole in one we had in our years together. Burt had one, and I thought we were going to have to carry him off the course. I have had three in my life, but never when I was with the group. But you never forget them.

Midget surprise

The year I was coaching midget hockey in the Rockford Hockey club I had a pretty good team. Midgets were fifteen and sixteen year olds. The nicest advantage of coaching midgets was many of them had drivers’ licenses and drove to practices. […]
