Monday, I had an experience that really opened my eyes. I had an eye doctor appointment that day and it went well. I had no diseases and no change in my glass prescription. That was the good news. I realized i was only a few blocks from Meijer grocery and they had a great sale on spiral cut hams, $0.89 a pound. So, I drove over to take advantage of this. As I pulled out of the eye doctors parking lot, I realized that my eyes were still dilated. Not a problem, I just put on my sunglasses.

As I get into the grocery store parking lot, I realize that it is gray and cloudy, and I can’t see very well. Not a problem, I will just be very careful. I look for a grocery cart left in the lot as I use them as a walker. There are none, so I take my walker out of the car. I didn’t notice that I was standing on ice, and as I pulled it out of the car, I slipped and wrenched my back. it didn’t hurt too much at that time, so I went and made my purchase.

As the day went on, I became more and more aware of my back. By bedtime I was barely able to make it to the bed. I slept very little that night, and by morning knew I was in trouble. So, come morning I called my next-door neighbor Jose and told him of my plight. He immediately came over with a back strap that he felt would help me. Then he called every few hours to make sure I was still OK.

I heard from Kathy a retired nurse who lives across the street inquiring if I needed anything. I assured her I didn’t but would let her know if I did. Then I heard from Irwin down on the corner asking if I needed anything.

I lived in my old neighborhood for fifty years. I helped raise two generations of kids. The entire neighborhood knew me up close and personal. Never once on those fifty years did i hear from a neighbor when I was sick, had care trouble, or house maintenance problems.

It just goes to show me how wonderful it is here in Wesley Willows where we have all the support. However, in addition, all of us look out for each other. I am still thankful to Martha for researching and finding this place.
