My son Dan played hockey with Rockford Hockey Club from the time he was six years old until he left for college. He was a skilled player and was even invited to the Olympic tryouts. It was at Franklin Park rink in Franklin Park IL. Two pf the other players there were Ed Olychuck and Pat Lafontaine who you all know not only made the Olympic team but starred in the NHL. When Dan got home, I ask him how it went. He said OK, but said he was amazed at how good some guys were.
When he was of the right age, he went out for little league baseball. I didn’t remember him ever playing baseball or softball before. He made the team, but when we went to his games, he never played except to pinch hit once a game. I didn’t understand, but not wanting to be an interfering parent, never said anything. I wasn’t aware that it was in violation of little league rules.
Anyhow, the season ended and they had a family picnic. We all brought dishes to pass and had a good time. Then Steve the coach said we were going to have father son softball game. He then said to take your son’s position. Dan said very loud for all to hear, “Dad go sit on the bench”.
Turns out I was the only father who had ever pitched softball. So, I pitched. Dan never went out for baseball again, but played soccer through high school.
