On my mother’s side of the family, I never had any doubts as to my ancestry. It is German
Swiss. The Swiss came over from Switzerland to get away from the Catholic oppression. They traveled through the Cumberland Gap and settled in Tell City Indiana.
My Dad’s side I was always told that we were German English. A golfing buddy of mine Hardy spent a long time checking my ancestry. He spent a lot of time on Ancestry.com. It turns out that in 1654 my great ……. great grandfather Henry Mitchell was head of the clan in Edenborough Scotland. Eventually the clan moved to Ireland. Then in due time moved to Virginia in the United States. From there the clan split and the northern half settled in Muhlenberg County Kentucky which is where my grandfather is from.
I said to Martha “Seventy-eight years old and find out I am Scotch Irish”. she says, “Well that explains why you play the banjo”.
