I was in Ottawa Canada doing some forensic engineering for Suntec. It involved an oil spill in the basement of a house. Since Suntec manufactures the pump and valves controlling oil flow I was there to determine who or what was at fault. I won’t go into the details, but a plumbing error by the installer turned out to be the cause. The investigation was over a day before we expected. My return airline ticket was for two days later.

Then I got the phone call that my mother in laws funeral had been moved up. I needed to get home that day. So, I hustled to the airport and went to the United Airlines counter to get my flight changed. That was when I got the bad news. My United Airlines ticket actually belonged to Continental Airlines and nothing could be done about it. I explained my need and received their condolences but was stuck with my original ticket. I told them that I had checked out of my hotel, so would take a seat and ponder any options that I had.

While I was sitting there in a funk, I was approached by a couple of airline employees. It was two women, one from United, and the other from Continental. It turns out that the two of them went to their supervisors and pled my case. Before I could say anything, they handed me a ticket. It turned out to be on one of those high-speed commuter aircraft flying directly into Chicago Ohare. I was able to make the funeral on time.

I had written their names down before leaving, and I wrote two letters to the airlines complimenting the two women and their service for me.

I remember that trip. Sometimes you run into Angels in the most unexpected places.
